It takes about three hours including the software installations. I build my own pcs and have for years (because it so simple.square plug goes in the sauare hole.) and jumping in head first will eliminate the intimidation that most people have in the begining. By that time I had already studied and found out what chipset DOES work. When I installed PTLE, I had no concerns at all.

You might as well start with how to put one together. You are going to have to learn how PCs work. Just don't buy into the "Dell will make all your probs go away." dream. I have literally sold and installed hundreds of Dells in the last six months alone. I worked for Compaq for 6 years as a Quality Engineer - we had the same problems there. Like I said Dell is "just like everybody else" in this regard. This sounds like I am DELL bashing but I'm not. If there is a problem with your PC, they'll have you taking things apart while you are on the phone and doing all sorts of stuff that doesn't have anything to do with your problem simply because their supervisor has told your support contact to have you do TRY something. You might as well learn to support yourself. #2 Just like everybody else, Dell's support sucks. Like was said in a previous thread, you have to "tweek" the system just like any other PC. This SOUNDS like a good thing, but it is really just extra garbage getting loaded into memory on boot. They actually pre-load Dell Support s/w (DWLCLIENT) that notifies you when updates are available.

#1 You do have to update drivers periodically. BTW.2 things about Dell and any OEM, generally. If you are in the Houston area, I can give you a hand. I'm sure you don't qualify geographically, but the people here on the DUC can help if there is an issue putting a system together. Of what city are you on the "North Side"? I offered to help people FOC in the Houston area a couple of weeks back. you'll learn how to troubleshoot better from the experience (and instead of days of downtime you'll have minutes if there's a problem - and there are always problems, even with macs), it will be cheaper and the machine will be much more powerful than anything you could buy for even twice the money. the bottom line is if you want a serious system, you're going to have to do some serious tweeking. just because all the parts of a dell are configured to work together doesn't mean that they work together well, or that they work at all with hardware you introduce to the system (like digi hardware). I would NEVER get a hack PC from Cheapo PC Inc - they have a short lifespan and so will you - constantly be playing with IRQs and downloading the latest drivers every day. If it works with ProTools it works great. I bought a DELL for this exact reason - everything is preconfigured and works together. Good point - especially about the chipset.
